Effects of wood-derived lignans on broilers

Efficient nutrient utilization is a key driver of poultry performance, yet oxidative stress and low-grade intestinal inflammation can impair nutrient absorption and growth. In this study, a wood-derived feed supplement containing the lignans magnolol and honokiol, AGROMED ROI, was evaluated in a 35-day broiler trial and complemented by targeted cell culture investigations. Broilers receiving the supplement achieved higher final body weight (+90.8 g), improved feed conversion ratio (1.32 vs. 1.41) and enhanced digestibility of crude protein, calcium and phosphorus. In addition, reduced expression of the pro-inflammatory marker IL-8 suggested lower intestinal inflammatory signaling.

The mechanistic investigations provided explanations for these outcomes. While magnolol supported epithelial restitution and wound healing, honokiol exhibited pronounced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities by reducing oxidative stress and suppressing inflammatory signaling. Together, these complementary effects may contribute to maintaining intestinal function and creating favorable conditions for more efficient nutrient utilization and productive performance.

Conclusion

These findings highlight the potential of wood-derived lignans as a nutritional strategy to support gut health and metabolic efficiency in modern poultry production. By combining enhanced nutrient digestibility with biological activities linked to intestinal integrity and inflammation control, magnolol and honokiol represent a promising approach to improving production efficiency without relying on antibiotic growth promoters.
